About
Welcome to Living the Word blog. I’m glad you are here and hope I can be a resource for you as you seek to study God’s Word and ultimately, know and love God our Father more.
Meet the author
Hello, my name is Jason Thomas, and I’m the primary author of the content on this blog site. I’m a conservative evangelical Christian who identifies with the Baptist tradition of Christianity. I hold a Master of Arts in Biblical Exposition from Liberty University and serve as a deacon and Sunday School teacher in my local church. For more about my doctrinal beliefs, check out the Doctrinal Statement page on this site.
Why this site exists
This site exists to bridge a perceived gap in Christian education. For a long time, I served as a Sunday School teacher, but I often felt unqualified to teach others the Word of God. I wanted to be a better teacher, and so I searched for methodologies and resources to help. Inevitably, I fell in love more with purchasing resources as opposed to using them. After spending more on Christian resources than most, I then decided I needed to go to seminary and be properly trained. Two years later, I received my Masters, and while I felt more prepared to teach, the necessary habits of good, faithful study and preparation were still a matter of actually doing rather than hearing. None of this is to say I regretted my journey, but it does shed light on the issue at hand: most Sunday School teachers are not going to spend thousands on Christian resources and seminary. So where does that leave us?
This is the gap I hope to bridge. My desire is true discipleship in our churches and amongst God’s people. One Christian cannot reach everyone, but all Christians, each doing their part, can. We who are able should disciple those who are not. As such, I want to provide as many resources as I can to Sunday School teachers to help them in their studies. I hope you will find this site to be an affordable (free!) and trusted resource as you prepare to teach your class week in and week out. However, much like I stated before, not just teach them and hear God’s Word, but help them know it and apply it to their lives. This way, we can truly go forth and make disciples for Jesus Christ our Lord!
How I approach Scripture
I will cover my doctrine of God’s Word more fully in the Doctrinal Statement, but in short, I believe God’s Word as presented in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (ESV)
As such, I believe God’s Word holds the answer to all matters of spiritual need. In turn, I seek to faithfully communicate the original message of the text as it was intended for its original audience, interpret the timeless truths found therein, and then faithfully correlate and apply these truths to our modern contexts. I believe when, and only when, we know what God’s says, what He means, how to apply it, and then actually apply it and live it out, will we truly be “doers of the word” (Jas. 1:22, ESV).
